It's been about a year since the end of book one, so nowhere near the big time skip from book 4. Depending on what "activities" your character participated in, the length of jail time would vary. Still, that's not very fun and with Republic City in disarray and the police force disorganized without proper leaders, it's fair to say a character could have a reduced sentence. We do suggest you have your character refraining from murder unless you go the route of never being caught.
For AUs, what's important isn't so much the new history as it is your character's personality. You want to take a look at their personality and see what kind of lifestyle they would lead in this universe. So, you don't want to make the villain a hero in the AU because that's contrary to their core personality, but a thug or minor villain would fit in perfectly as a member of one of the triads or as an equalist, etc.
The history of an AU, on the other hand, is best kept vague, since one character's history can easily affect and alter another character's history. So if the big bad villain killed your character's parents, you probably want to keep that the same, just be vague on the circumstances, especially if the method of death doesn't fit in well with ATLA' universe, such as killed by a gunshot injury vs a violent bending assault. Things you want to watch out for is deciding another character's bender/non-bender status and, if a bender, what element they bend as those decisions might be conflicting with other players' ideas.
